Music for Henry IV is an original program created by Quentin Guérillot and dedicated to Italian music imported to France for the marriage of Henry IV to Marie de’ Medici.
Supposed to have taken place in July 1600, the union of the King of France and the young Italian woman was postponed due to a war that broke out between the future husband and the Duke of Savoy. The wedding took place in October, but the groom was still absent; his equerry took his place for the duration of the celebration. The union was a grandiose event, accompanied by various festivities and music that reflected the political and symbolic importance of the marriage.
It featured court and dance music, madrigals, religious and orchestral music. The music of Monteverdi, among others, was intended to reflect the grandeur of the event and reinforce its solemn and festive character. Marie de Medici had to wait until December to meet her official husband for the first time.
