SAINT-DENIS BASILICA
1, rue de la Légion d’honneur – Saint-Denis
The Basilica of Saint-Denis was the church of a prosperous and powerful abbey during the Middle Ages. It is also the first monumental masterpiece of Gothic art. The royal necropolis shelters the tombs of the Kings of France and possesses exceptional funerary sculpture from the 12th to the 16th centuries (Dagobert, Pepin the Short, Francis I, Catherine de Medici…). Several architects have left their mark on this building. Suger, abbot of Saint-Denis during the 12th century signed its façade and chevet, apparent sign of the new Gothic art emerging at the time. The other parts of the Basilica were built in the time of Saint-Louis, between 1230 and 1280, particularly by the architect Pierre de Montreuil. The Basilica was elevated to the rank of Cathedral in 1966 which designate the seat of the bishop.
