bandoneon
Bandoneon and tango have always been part of William Sabatier’s life. He began his musical studies at the age of 6, first with his father, a musician by profession, and then with Olivier Manoury. Olivier Manoury made him curious, opened the world of tango and gave him a taste for freedom.
Between 1995 and 2009, William Sabatier worked on a wide range of projects, some of which were far removed from the music of Buenos Aires. He has written stage music for theatre and dance. He has also crossed paths with many tango musicians in Europe, forging special relationships with Osvaldo Calo, Roger Helou, Ciro Perez, Vidal Rojas, Diego Trosman, Fernando Maguna and Romain Lecuyer.
Steeped in tango culture, in love with a spontaneous tango rooted in popular tradition, William Sabatier has initiated numerous projects in which he revisits the idiom of Buenos Aires music. In 2005, with guitarists Ciro Perez and Norberto Pedreira, he formed the ‘Trio PSP’. In 2008, with the conjunto negracha, he presented a programme based on the tango of the 1960s. In 2013, his admiration for the work of bandoneonist Leopoldo Federico led him to form the trio celebracionwith Aurélie Gallois (violin) and Romain Lecuyer (double bass). He can also be found alongside Roger Helou (piano) and Vidal Rojas (guitar) in duet form.
The conductor Leonardo García Alarcón invited him to work on his monteverdi-piazzolla project, premiered in 2009 at the Ambronay baroque music Festival. On this occasion, William Sabatier met tango singer Diego Flores. Since 2011, their cancionero porteño programme has travelled throughout Europe and Latin America. The album desde gardel, released in 2012 by Ambronay Éditions, has been hailed by the critics.
William Sabatier has been pursuing a solo career for over twenty years. Invited by prestigious classical orchestras (Orchestre Régional d’Auvergne, Europeen Camerata, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Orchestre lyrique d’Avignon, Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg, Nederlands Kamerorkest, Orchestre de chambre de Genève, etc.), he is a leading interpreter and arranger of the works of Astor Piazzolla. He regularly performs at such prestigious venues as London’s Wigmore Hall, Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Hall, Paris’s Salle Pleyel, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Brussels’s Flagey and Geneva’s Victoria Hall.
William Sabatier performed at the Festival de Saint-Denis in 2023 with the Pasion Argentina composed and conducted by Leonardo García-Alarcón with the ensemble Cappella Mediterranea.
