Souad Massi is an internationally famous French-Algerian artist. Considered one of the most beautiful North African voices she is sometimes compared to Joan Baez and Tracy Chapman. Today, she is a fixture on the folk/rock scene. In September 2023 she won the prestigious German award Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik (German Record Critics’ Award) in the Folk-Singer/Songwriter Category.
Since she arrived in France twenty years ago and carried by an unwavering determination for her values of freedom and justice, Massi has enjoyed a string of successes and awards (golden records and Victoires de la Musique). The international critics remain convinced.
In her first album “Sequana“ Souad Massi sings about her convictions and battles. Well-known for her folk and chaabi music, her sound palette expands to the Sahel, the Caribbean, Brazil and even sometimes rock. Supported by Justin Adams (Rachid Taha, Tinariwen, Robert Plant) in production, Massi has renewed her team. Thus, opening a new chapter to a carreer started in the nineties and marked by her leaving Algeria for France. She takes off looking for the sun of her childhood while hunting the cruelty that pushes dictators to cut off the poet’s hands.
Since the launch of her album in October 2022 Massi has been touring in France and internationally in prestigious avenues such as the Barbican Centre in London, the Salle Pleyel in Paris, the Opéra de Montpellier, the Théâtre de Provence in Aix-en- Provence, the Philharmonie in Cologne, the Tivoli in Utrecht, the Bozar in Brussels and many others.
