L.E.J is not just a musical journey, but also a tale of friendship.
Born between August and November 1993, Lucie, Elisa and Juliette grew up on the same street in Saint-Denis. They learned music together at the Conservatoire.
Elisa and Lucie were students at the Maîtrise de Radio France, while Juliette continued her studies at the Saint-Denis Conservatoire before forming L.E.J in 2013 as part of a cover competition linked to the group Tryo and the Nuits de Champagne Festival.
They won the competition, performed live, and quickly revealed themselves as natural-born performers. They went on to play both in the capital’s most iconic venues – from the Olympia to La Cigale – and at large-scale festivals. What followed was a whirlwind of success, marked by a Victoire de la Musique award in 2017 (Live Revelation), their viral summer hit mashups, a debut album En attendant l’album, a second record of original compositions Poupées russes, and most recently, Pas Peur released in June 2020.
Lucie plays the saxophone and sings. Elisa is on drums and vocals. Juliette handles the cello, guitar, bass, and backing vocals. These multi-instrumentalists perform together as a seamless trio, playing as if with six hands.
Now, they return with Volume II.
It’s the culmination of nine years in the industry, two decades of making music, and over a quarter of a century of friendship.
The trio that is L.E.J has lived through the frantic rhythm of touring, followed by more reflective moments where the three took time to regroup and embark on a new project: an album of covers of French songs – Volume II.
These are the very songs their parents used to play for them, ones they have sung since early childhood, now immortalised with brilliant arrangements that remain true to their identity: classical vocal harmonies with angelic tones, the ever-present cello, and the occasional surprise through modern sounds referencing their long-standing influences – afrobeat, reggaeton, bossa nova, electro…
