viola da gamba
Born in Paris into a family of musicians, Garance Boizot began playing the viola da gamba and cello at the age of seven. Her practice of both instruments quickly gave her the opportunity to explore a wide variety of ensemble settings, including orchestra, string quartet, and viol consort. This diversity of projects sparked a deep appreciation for collective music-making, as well as a strong affinity for her role as a bowed bass instrument within a continuo.
In 2014, after earning her Diplôme d’Études Musicales (DEM) in viola da gamba from the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Paris, she left France for the Netherlands. She joined the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, where she completed a Bachelor’s degree under the guidance of Mieneke van der Velden and Philippe Pierlot. It was during these years abroad that her passion for early music and harmonic progressions truly flourished.
In 2017, she returned to France to complete a Master’s degree in viola da gamba at the CNSMD in Lyon, studying with Marianne Muller.
Alongside her studies in the viola da gamba, she made the decision to permanently swap the spike of her modern cello for gut strings — marking the beginning of a new chapter in baroque cello, guided first by Hager Hanana, then Elena Andreyev.
In 2019, Garance became a permanent member of Les Kapsber’girls, an ensemble specializing in 17th- and 18th-century vocal music. In October 2022, the group released their second album, “Vous avez dit Brunettes”, on the Alpha label, which was warmly received by both audiences and critics. That same year, she also co-founded Ensemble Belombre with Louise Bouedo. Their debut program centers around transcriptions of Jacques Duphly’s Pièces de Clavecin for two bass viols.
Garance also performs occasionally with a range of French and European early music ensembles, including Les Musiciens de Saint Julien, Ratas del Viejo Mundo, Gli Angeli Genève, Concerto Soave, the Orchestre du Palais Royal, and Capriccio Stravagante.
She regularly joins various projects that take her to major festivals in France and across Europe (including the Netherlands, Belgium, Latvia, and Portugal), confirming her passion for travel, sharing the stage with international musicians, and engaging in rich musical and human cultural exchanges.
