Conducted by Camille Delaforge, Il Caravaggio is an orchestra playing on period instruments, dedicated to the lyrical repertoires of the Baroque and Classical periods. It teams up with the most brilliant singers of the new generation and stands out for its sense of theatricality, virtuosity and intense expressiveness.
The ensemble attaches particular importance to the rediscovery of unpublished musical heritage. Each year, it highlights the work of forgotten composers such as Isabella Leonarda, Élisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre and Mademoiselle Duval, whose opera Les Génies it recorded at the Opéra de Versailles.
Il Caravaggio is in residence at the Festival de Saint-Denis, the Festival baroque de Pontoise, the Fondation Singer-Polignac and the Île-de-France region. The ensemble performs regularly on national stages (Atelier Lyrique de Tourcoing, Opéra de Rennes, Opéra Royal de Versailles, Angers Nantes Opéra, Festival international d’Opéra de Beaune) and internationally, notably in Amsterdam (Dutch National Opera), Geneva, Bilbao, etc.
In 2024-2025, the ensemble gave twenty stage performances of Campra’s Carnaval de Venise, which can be heard at the Opéra de Rennes, the Opéra de Compiègne, the Atelier Lyrique de Tourcoing and the Théâtre de Cornouailles, among others, through the co[opera]tive system, in collaboration with the directors Clédat and Petitpierre. During the same season, Il Caravaggio recorded Rameau’s opera Pygmalion at the Château de Versailles.
Every year, as part of its residency programme, the ensemble conducts around fifty educational events in schools, hospitals and prisons. Il Caravaggio is also particularly committed to the professional integration of young artists at the start of their careers, regularly inviting them to take part in its productions alongside experienced musicians.
In 2024, the ensemble created the Studio Il Caravaggio, a lyric troupe designed to accompany eight young singers at the start of their careers, giving them the opportunity to perfect their skills and take part in the ensemble’s productions.
