Blick Bassy is a Cameroonian singer, composer, guitarist and percussionist who sings in the Bassa language. Born in 1974 to the Bassa ethnic group, Blick Bassy comes from a large family. He spent part of his childhood in Yaoundé and in his grandparents’ village, where he discovered nature and came into contact with various musical and choreographic traditions specific to Cameroon. In 2019, he released his fourth album, 1958, in which he pays tribute to Ruben Um Nyobe, the hero of Cameroon’s anti-colonial resistance. This album won him the Grand Prix des musiques du monde de la Sacem 2019. The album 1958 also won Best Album in the ‘Africa’ category at the Songlines Music Awards 2020 organised by the renowned British magazine Songlines. Blick Bassy has been invited to perform at the Francofolies festival in La Rochelle in 2021. Blick Bassy is also the author of his first novel, Le Moabi Cinéma, published by Gallimard, which won the Grand Prix Littéraire d’Afrique Noire.
