Marcela Barrios Hernández
A Colombian photographer, she practices documentary photography and portraiture using film techniques and traditional processes. She has worked extensively on issues related to the Mediterranean, Arab, and Muslim worlds, as the Other is at the heart of her research. Her photographs reveal a universe filled with metaphors linked to the cultural mix resulting from post-colonial processes.
DORADO
Invited in 2023 and 2024 to the Métis Plaine Commune Festival, organized by the Festival de Saint-Denis, photographer Marcela Barrios Hernández has created some fifty photographic works in homage to the otherness, cultural intersections, and cultural mixes that shape the Seine-Saint-Denis region. These works are the result of a dialogue between photography and other artistic disciplines: painting, illumination, drawing, textiles, ceramics, storytelling, as well as traditional photographic techniques.
Playful, wild, and imbued with Latin American poetry, these images draw inspiration from the archetypes of the colonial history of the Americas, where gold is the common thread of this exhibition. Gold, the driving force of colonial conquests, also becomes the symbol of the cultural wealth born of stories of crossbreeding.
