Graduate of the Paris Conservatoire in harp, chamber music and interpretation of early vocal music, Sandrine Piau was revealed to the public by William Christie. Today, she boasts an extensive repertoire and confirms her exceptional position in the lyric world.
She has performed on the greatest international venues: Paris Opera, Salzburg Festival, La Monnaie, Muziektheater, Bayerische Staatsoper, Covent Garden London, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Aix-en-Provence Festival, Opéra de Monte-Carlo. Amongst her role are: Cleopatra (Giulio Cesare/Haendel), Alcina (Alcina/Haendel), Morgana (Alcina/Haendel), Dalinda (Ariodante/Haendel), Mélisande (Pelléas et Mélisande/Debussy), Sandrina (La Finta Giardiniera/Mozart), Sister Constance of St. Denis (Dialogues of the Carmelites/Poulenc), Pamina (The Magic Flute/Mozart), Donna Anna (Don Giovanni/Mozart), Despina (Così fan tutte/Mozart), Requiem by Mozart (Pichon/Castellucci), Titania (A Midsummer Night’s Dream/Britten) and the roles of Mother-in-law in Kaija Saariaho’s world creation opera Innocence.
She has worked with conductors such as N. Harnoncourt, P. Herreweghe, R. Pichon, C. Rousset, F. Biondi, J. Chauvin, G. Capuano, G. Antonini, E. Haïm, J.-C. Malgoire, A. Marcon, R. Alessandrini, J. Corréas, S. MacLeod, M. Corboz, E. Inbal, D. Harding, M. Plasson, L. Langrée, I. Bolton, A. Altinoglu, K. Masur, C. Dutoit, Myung-Whun Chung, T. Currentzis, L. Equilbey, V. Jurowski, S. Mälkki, etc.
Sandrine Piau dedicated several albums to Haendel and Mozart and recorded many recitals. Her albums received several awards (Gramophone Editor’s Choice, Diapason d’or, Choc Classica, Clef d’or ResMusica…). Today, Sandrine Piau is exclusively recording for the label Alpha Classics.
Her plans for 2023/2024 include concerts and recordings of Lully’s Atys and Così fan tutte in Munich, as well as the world creation of Marc André Dalbavie’s opera La Mélancolie de la résistance at the Berlin State Opera.
Sandrine Piau was made a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres in 2006 and voted “Lyric Artist of the Year” at the Victoires de la Musique afterwards.
Sandrine Piau sang at the Festival de Saint-Denis in 2012 in Mozart’s Davidde Penitente, conducted by Louis Langrée with the Orchestre de chambre de Paris.
