Born in Italy, Speranza Scappucci, a graduate of the Juilliard School and the Conservatorio di Musica Santa Cecilia in Rome, regularly works with the world’s leading opera houses. She will take up the position of Principal Guest Conductor at the Royal Opera House in London starting from the 2025–2026 season.
From 2017 to 2022, she served as Music Director of the Opéra Royal de Wallonie, where she conducted Madame Butterfly, La Cenerentola, La Sonnambula, Aida, I Puritani, Eugene Onegin, Simon Boccanegra, and Carmen. With The Barber of Seville, she made her debut at the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto and returned to Zurich Opera to conduct La Bohème.
Her concert appearances have taken her to Bordeaux, Liège, Budapest, Lyon, and Paris. She has conducted L’elisir d’amore, La Bohème, and La Cenerentola at the Vienna State Opera, Maria Stuarda at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées,Tosca at Washington National Opera, La Bohème at the Semperoper Dresden, Così fan tutte at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse, and La Traviata at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. She made her debut at the New National Theatre Tokyo with Lucia di Lammermoor. She was the first woman to conduct I Capuleti e i Montecchi at La Scala in Milan and later at the Paris Opera.
In recent seasons, she has notably conducted Rigoletto at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Macbeth at the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto, Dialogues des Carmélites at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie, La Fille du régiment at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, La Traviata at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, La Rondine at the Metropolitan Opera, Don Pasquale at the Paris Opera, and Turandot in Washington.
During the 2024–2025 season, she will conduct Eugene Onegin at the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto, Madame Butterfly at the Paris Opera, and La Traviata at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich.
In 2018, Speranza Scappucci conducted Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater with Il Pomo d’Oro at the Saint-Denis Festival.
