The subject of the Gurrelieder is a simple story of love and death, immersed in romanticism.
In the same line as Mahler’s 8th, the work makes us hear an unexpected Schoenberg, far from the works for which he is usually known.
A magnificent harmonic style and a large range of orchestral colours assure that this piece, which has been chosen by Esa-Pekka Salonen to celebrate his own birthday (he will be 60), is irresistible.
Never before performed in the Basilica, Schoenberg’s Gurrelieder, a musical monument, conducted by maestro Esa-Pekka Salonen on his return to the Festival, are the event of the 50th anniversary!
