MONTEVERDI
VESPRO DELLA BEATA VERGINE

Audio/Vidéo

Composed for the Venice San Marco Basilica, Monteverdi’s Vesperæ from 1610 dazzle with a myriad colours and sounds. The Madrigals and most importantly Orfeo have left their mark – the role of voices and of instruments, and more generally, a theatrical style, have all informed church music.

From solos to spectacular double-choirs, the diversity of the pieces that compose the work only strengthens its grandiose architecture. Sir John Eliot Gardiner comes back to the Festival with this musically revolutionary sacred epic, and seizes the Basilica with the orchestra and choirs he made legendary.
