MAHLER DAS LIED VON DER ERDE
A powerful, unclassifiable piece, both a symphony with voices and a Lieder cycle with orchestra, the Song of the Earth is first and foremost the song of the human condition, the song of loneliness in front of the eternal. The texts of this score – the composer’s second to last piece – are of Mahler’s own hand. Inspired from Chinese poems, they probe his most favoured topics and stretch from a serene youth to the last Adieu.
The two soloist singers are both specialists of this repertoire: heroic, Wagnerian Brandon Jovanovich meets the expressive intensity of mezzo Karen Cargill. Both go back and forth singing this earth-bound adventure that looks to the skies.

The royal Basilica of Saint-Denis used to be the church of a prosperous, powerful abbey in the Middle Ages, and was the first monumental masterpiece of Gothic art. The royal necropolis houses the tombs of the Kings of France, and boasts remarkable funeral sculptures from the 12th century to the 16th century (Dagobert, Pepin the Short, Francis I, Catherine de’ Medici…)
