BACH MOTETS BWV 225, 227 AND 229
BERIO CORO

Audio/Vidéo

With the high standards and intensity that are a hallmark of his work, Teodor Currentzis compares and contrasts in the Basilica the powerful rise of Bach’s motets – masterpieces elevated by the voices of his Perm choir – with the dense and organic Berio piece Coro. The latter ambitions to reconcile popular music with erudite music, most notably in its use of a “verbal matter” informed by texts from all over the world as well as poetic fragments by Pablo Neruda.

In a unique scenic arrangement where each chorister is partnered with an instrumentalist, Berio invents not only a choir of instruments and voices but also allows us to witness various ways of setting text to music, each one a new, varied landscape or climate – resulting in a strong portrait of a united humanity.

Teodor Currentzis interrogates and brings closer two highlights of polyphonic music merely separated by three centuries, and fills every last dimension of the Basilica.
